This course explores the fascinating evolution of biological science, tracing the growing of humanity and the understanding of life from prehistoric times to the 21st century. It follows the journey from early human observations of plants and animals to modern breakthroughs in genomics and biotechnology.
Through six historical chapters, the course examines how each era has contributed to shaping what we now call biology, from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, through the civilizations of antiquity, the Islamic Golden Age, the Renaissance, the modern scientific revolutions, and into the contemporary era.
By the end of the course, students will appreciate how curiosity, experimentation, and innovation have continually redefined the understanding of life. The story of biological science is ultimately the story of how humans sought to explain their world, heal the body, and sustain life on Earth.
